Sorry to be a kill joy, but the probable reason why Microsoft renewed the license to 'Killer Instinct' was to prevent Nintendo from buying it back. On July 20th of this year it was reported that Nintendo was in direct negotiations with Microsoft to buy back all of their old franchises from Rare. There hasn't been any news on what came out of those negotiations.
Seemingly what has happened is that the talks fell through and because they know that Nintendo probably WANTS to make Killer Instinct 3 (along with sequels to other classic Rare games) that it would be a bad idea to let the license run out leaving Nintendo able to buy it outright. So by renewing the license, it remains the property of Microsoft.
This isn't unprecedented. Microsoft has eaten many franchises and companies that they have considered a threat. On one hand, you can't fault them for using their most powerful weapon (their money,) but on the other hand it is a shame that the 'Killer Instinct' franchise is being held hostage like this. It goes to show you just exactly how Microsoft thinks about YOU the consumer.
Apparently yesterday they came to an agreement with FOX in order to share the rights of the 'Killer Instinct' after a judge blocked the renewal of the franchise after a dispute over the 2005 FOX TV-series named "Killer Instinct." So either Microsoft is planning to make it soon, or they definitely were trying to block Nintendo from re-acquiring the rights to it.
I don't know. It seems highly unlikely at this point that Microsoft would be lifting a finger to make anything Killer Instinct related. The people that run the gaming division at Microsoft care more about turning the 720 into all-in-one entertainment box than about games. There is a possibility that they may be planning on releasing HD versions of KI 1 and 2 on XBLA, but that actually makes sense and people actually want that so it won't happen.
My best guess is that after talk broke down between Microsoft and Nintendo last year about Nintendo reacquiring Rare franchises and possibly buying Rare back, Microsoft wanted to protect their assets. It would have been a disaster if Nintendo were to get Killer Instinct back and make an awesome KI for the Wii U. It would make Microsoft fumbling of Rare ultra transparent.
I hope that Retro Studios is working on a brand-new fighting game for the Wii U. Maybe that is why Retro pulled their game from E3 last year. It was a month after E3 in July 2012 that the news of the negotiations between Microsoft and Nintendo were going on. Maybe Nintendo halted production on whatever Retro was working on because they felt they were gonna get KI back and have Retro make KI3. I guess we'll get our answers at E3.
totally agree with this. MS would renew a franchise just to stop others using it. Gov needs to amend laws to allow dead IP to be snapped up easier. 25 year limit??
Very eerie, Orchid looks like all mysterious. I noticed that her costume looks a bit more metallic, almost robotic! I guess it takes tough material to lock up those awesome curves. Thanks so much for drawing her! She looks awesome.
The only thing I would say is that her lips look a bit off, especially the top one or is it a twisted pose?
